Every spring a beautiful traditional gypsy caravan, complete with Piebald heavy horse, camp on some common land nearby and I drive past and think how wonderful and free the traveller life must be but also possibly sometimes a bit cold and damp and probably not quite the romantic notion I had in mind.  For the less hardy of us gypsy caravans and shepherd’s wagons are a wonderful outside extension; a great place for a home office, studio, spare room or weekend escape.

We were lucky enough to inherit the shepherd’s wagon above when we purchased our house. The shepherd’s wagon has been passed through several families already.  It was an office and now for us is a magical playroom.  There is something special about being in the wagon, sitting with the door open and gazing over the Devon hills to Dartmoor. The children love being outdoors and you do feel much closer to nature. I think we would all happily live in it!

The secret is to decorate the interior in a way that maximises the space but also creates a cosy hideway from the world. Hanging lanterns twinkling in summer evenings are a must as is an open fire and some warm throws to snuggle up under.

We have stumbled across some wonderfully ornate gypsy caravans on lifestyle photo shoots and none more beautiful than this gypsy caravan, called Pippen.  The caravan has been beautifully restored to the upmost detail.  For the ultimate in peaceful weekend retreats you can stay in Pippen, hidden away in rural devon.  There is even an outside hot tub for you to take a soak under the stars. Even if the traveller life isn’t for you, a taste of it is definitely good for us all.
