We have a wonderful selection of gift ideas perfect for Christmas.   At Nkuku we are passionate about fair trade and traditional skills. We love knowing the whole story from artisan to the end customer.  We’ve put together some of our favourite fair trade Christmas gift ideas, starting with the Savannah shopper -  the  ’must have’ accessory this Christmas. It is simply beautiful by design and material.  The leather is a rich tan that enhances with time.

Each piece is made by one artisan from start to finish.  The artisan’s make up a co operative of over 40 families, working together for the collective well being of their community. The process is an age old skill once used to create saddles and shoes, now used for these beautiful shoppers.

These exquisite Rustic leather journals make a stylish gift for the man in your life.  Each one is hand made using the same beautiful untreated leather, dyed with tree bark and vegetable extract.

The paper inside  our journals is hand made from recycled cotton.  The cotton is not grown specifically for papermaking, we collect the cotton left over from the clothing industry that would otherwise go to waste. Cotton paper is considered tree free as no wood pulp is used and fewer chemicals are required for processing cotton paper than other paper. Making cotton paper also produces less waste and provides the perfect acid free paper suitable for photograph albums and journals.

These beautiful enamelware tiffin’s have a festive feel with their stunning Eva bird design.  They make a unique gift and are perfect for storing all those Christmas goodies!

All our enamelware is handpainted in Kashimir by skilled aritsans.  This producer group has set up some fantastic commuinty schemes including a football club.  When you hold a piece of enamelware in your hand and really look at the work that has gone into the finish, you truly appreciate the beauty of the piece.

For a  timeless gift why not choose one of these beautiful fair trade Mali pottery slanting jugs. Each one is hand made as part of a fair trade project in southern India.

The project was established to improve the lives and challenging living standards of artisans in this area. Their business growth and development benefits each employee directly and has improved living standards and opportunities.

Tidy up this Christmas with the ultimate in stylish storage, these hand made Indra coil baskets look fantastic be it filled with logs, magazines or toys.

The NGO that produces these baskets supports a collecitve of 400 women, providing sustainable employment and empowerment for women living in rural farming areas in southern India. Each one is made by hand from jute.  Jute is a great eco product as it is made from natural vegetable fibre. It is bio degradable and sustainable and its cultivation has little need for fertilizer or pesticides as it is a rain fed crop.

Lastly, why not treat the cook in your house to one of these beautiful  Chunni sqaure chopping boards or an Ahanti storage boxes, ideal for storing fresh produce. The natural character and grain of the mango wood adds to the beauty of the product.

The mango wood we use is sustainable. Mango trees are initially grown for their fruit but once they have stopped producing they can be cut down and used to create wood products. The removal of the old trees makes space for farmers to plant new mango trees. This not only means that none of the wood is wasted but offers a supplementary income to mango wood farmers.
